New to yoga? Relax, it's easy to get started. Here are some yoga FAQs:
I've heard that yoga is relaxing. Will I get a workout?
Most likely, yes. It is relaxing for the mind and body but it's also fairly vigorous.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, not too loose clothing like what you would wear to the gym. Don't dress too warmly. You will sweat. Yoga is practiced barefoot.
What should I bring?
Bring a mat if you have one (if not, I have some to borrow free of charge). Bring some water too.
I'm nervous about practicing yoga in front of other people. Is that normal?
Yes! Very much so. Be assured that nobody is looking at you. After a few minutes, you'll be having so much fun you won't care anyway.
Should I take a private class first?
Privates are useful if you are too busy for a regular class, if there is something specific you want to work on, if you are injured or if you are feeling really insecure about practicing in front of others.
I've done yoga before but I didn't like it. Is it useful to try anyway?
Yoga teachers are like ice cream flavors. You will like some and not others. Try someone new. You might surprise yourself!
Is yoga religious?
Not at all. Yoga centers mind and body and can get you in great shape. I have taught several rabbis, ministers and priests who all felt that it helped them deepen their beliefs in their own faiths.
What if I have an injury or illness?
Many injuries can be dealt with during a class session. If you are concerned, check with your doctor first and please let me know before class if you are ill or injured.
Can I practice while pregnant?
Most women can practice yoga during pregnancy though certain poses may be contraindicated. If you are concerned, check with your doctor first and please let me know before class if you are pregnant.
How many times per week should I practice?
This is a very individual decision. I recommend new students start with one class per week and go from there.
